Walt is an accomplished artist, photographer, expedition guide, and ecologist with extensive global experience in places such as Alaska, the American West, Antarctica, Central and South America, East Africa, Madagascar, and Australia. He pulls these diverse interests into his teaching, writing, and illustrating. Walt's most recent book is Inland Island: The Sutter Buttes (2004), and he is continuing research on the Sky Islands of the American Southwest for future publication.

 

He works locally as a founding board member and officer of the Granite Dells Preservation Foundation, the Watershed We Want initiative, and the Watson and Willow Lakes Ecosystem Important Bird Area (IBA).  He is Chair of the Board of the Biocultural Conservation Institute, which features a ecotourism guide training school in the Amboseli region of Kenya. 

 

Walt teaches and advises on nature photography and art, ecotourism, ecology and evolution, plant and animal diversity, animal behavior, conservation, and resource management (e.g., wildlife and wetlands). Visit Walt's personal blog and web site.
