Ecological Literacy is the understanding of Nature and its many processes. The present issues in our Ecosystems and biodiversity call for serious conservation efforts and adaptive management practices.

We are experiencing "the sixth wave of extinctions in the past half-billion years. We’re currently experiencing the worst spate of species die-offs since the loss of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Although extinction is a natural phenomenon, it occurs at a natural 'background' rate of about one to five species per year. Scientists estimate we’re now losing species at 1,000 to 10,000 times the background rate, with literally dozens going extinct every day," says Chivian, E. and A. Bernstein in the book Sustaining life: How human health depends on biodiversity.

This wave of extinction results from human activity. This is why I chose to study Sustainable Community Development. My passion is educating about and fulfilling our human niche as the custodians of the Earth.

I feel spiritually akin to nature and I am heavily influenced by its health. I deeply desire to make the world a better place by restoring the productiveness of nature in areas where it has been exploited beyond its regenerative capacity.
