Glossary

 

Definitions from Cox & Wade (1985), p. 242.

 

Civil death: denial of the right to vote, the right to hold public office, and the right to enter into contracts.

 

Hands off doctrine: refusal on behalf of the courts to hear suits on behalf  of prison inmates.

 

Good time: time in which an inmate abides by the rules of the institution, which is then subtracted from his or her sentence.

 

Community corrections: correctional programs, such as probation, parole, work release, and halfway houses, in which prisoners are allowed and encouraged to maintain community and family ties.
